Facial Recognition In iPhoto

I posted last month about a media search tool for faces in photos posted on the Internet.  I didn’t give it much thought until this morning, while listening to twip, the gang were discussing about the new iPhoto features announced at Macworld.

(Yes yes this is old news, but I don’t follow Apple stories.)

So, iPhoto now has face recognition features. This is not new technology in itself, but they demoed the ability to automatically tag photos with the Facebook profile of your friends ( you have to give the full name and address).   Then, Facebook users browsing your profile can tag other people in the photo and these will be automagically synced back to iPhoto.

If this becomes more integrated with social networks and a public search for all photos is made possible, it would be a great tool for organizing personal albums, reminiscing the past and finding hidden gems in your old photos. Imagine finding out you were in the same photo ( in the background) with a close friend, only you met years later. Or finding a

However, it would be harder to pretend to be somewhere else (“I’m sick”, “I’m stuck in traffic”). You HAVE to pray no one took a photo of you and uploaded it to the internets. With almost everyone on the street carrying a camera (or a cellphone), you have to pray hard.  Potentially, a camera pointed to you at all times.  Street photographers will have to think twice before uploading photos of other people.

On the other hand, it will be easier to identify folks who pretend to be police officers and harass photographers.

As Coal said, ” It’s a pandoras box I tells ya!”.

C# Resources for C++ Developers

Since I am currently leading a group of C++ developers on a C# project, I wanted to write a FAQ on C# for C++ Programmers. However, after searching the internet, it seems a lot has already been written on the topic. I’ll read through these first,  update this list  and, if I find it necessary, write a summary.

Near Arakawa River

Had a photo-bike/walk near Arakawa River. I played a lot with long exposure shots. The live view on the 40d really helps a lot with getting the image tact sharp.

[004/365] Nightlight

004

City’s Nightlight. Heaven’s Nightlight.

Went bike riding and photowalking near the Arakawa River.  I got some nice long exposure shots of the river and the cityscape.

Tomorrow, work starts. I fear I won’t be able to take photos again. Good luck to us all!

[003/365] Body Clock

body clock

My body clock is fried (grilled?). And vacation is almost over. I was up until 10am this morning before I hit bed.

I’m gonna have to force myself to sleep in an hour or so.

On the other hand, I’ve almost finished organizing the photos for last year. Almost. There is still a big batch of photos from the Asakusa Samba parade that I have yet to look at.

[002/365] Commute

commuteCentral Gate, Ueno Station

Aileen, a friend coming back from a holiday trip to Yamagata asked to be fetched from the Ueno station. The handle to her huge huge bag broke and she needed some help carrying it. I needed the exercise too, so I walked from Minowa Station to Ueno Station.

I borrowed Meema’s fisheye lens and took a few shots along the way and on the station. While waiting for Aileen at the ticket gate, I played around with long exposure shots. This is 2.5seconds at f/22.6, handheld.

There was a more interesting shot: a man was standing still amongst a blurred crowd of commuters. But I was too far from him (he was inside the gate) and the wide angle of the fisheye made him really small. Oh, well.

DAY 1/365 Out of the Comfort Zone

Day 1/365
2009/01/01

Yes, I’m doing a Project365. For the first shot, I tried all the usual things : the moon, sunset, landscape, food, feet.
Then it hit me. This should be all about experimentation. This should be about getting out of my photographic comfort zone.

It’s not as polished a shot as I had wanted, but here it is: Flowers in my lens.

Those are the room lights being relected/refracted on a Sigma 170-500 5-6.3 APO Lens. I shot this with the cheapo 50mm1.8.
